This platform is more than just a map; it is a living record of the Algarve's marine biodiversity. By integrating real-time data from iNaturalist, we bridge the gap between scientific research and community observation, empowering citizens, tourists, and businesses to become active guardians of our ocean.
"We have designed a collaborative, transparent and adaptable model that will generate value both for marine ecosystems and for the companies and communities in which they operate."
Adelino Canário, CCMAR
This platform is a key instrument of the Algarve Marine Observatory (OMA), officially launched in May 2025 by the Centre for Marine Sciences of the University of the Algarve (CCMAR). The OMA was born from a critical need: to strengthen the link between science and the economic sector—specifically hospitality—in a region highly dependent on the ocean.
We are built on partnership. From our founding memorandum with Highgate Portugal to collaborations with local authorities and the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, OMA represents a shared responsibility.
Just like the symbolic textile art by Vanessa Barragão that marked our launch, this platform represents a "web" of collaboration—connecting researchers, hotel guests, locals, and investment groups in a unified effort to protect our marine resources.
We are proud of the growing network of citizens and scientists working together to document our coast. To date, our community of volunteers has contributed photos and records, successfully identifying and mapping distinct species across the Algarve.
Now it is your turn. Whether you are a visitor snapping a photo of a crab in a rock pool, or a hotel manager looking to educate your guests, you are part of the OMA network.
